Some customers may be nervous about the change, but the Laughlins ensure they’re in good hands. They anticipate being patrons themselves once the Burkharts open, Daniel said. Burgers will be featured on the new menu and will be made fresh, Robin said. Andy expects to offer a bourbon bacon jam burger, along with other specials.

It’s been a dream of the Burkharts to open their own sit-down restaurant, and they said they’re looking forward to their next adventure. SPRING ARBOR, MI – After 13 years, Laughlin’s Slice of Spice in Spring Arbor is closing. But fear not, a new business plans to keep the wood-fired pizza cooking.

They have been instrumental in ensuring a smooth and successful launch of our new franchise locations. We have owned and operated businesses with over 300 employees, generating over 20 million dollars in annual sales. Therefore, we are well-versed in providing excellent customer service, and leading and managing a successful business. We believe that the quality of Tony Gemignani’s product can be successful in every area, and we are excited to see where this journey takes us. State of Mind’s ode to the “grandma pie” is a double-proofed and double-baked pan pizza with mozzarella, organic sauce, pecorino cheese and fresh basil. "People are getting more and more interested in Japanese culture," says Executive Director Kazumi Teune.

Tony Gemignani’s Slice House is Unfolding Big SoCal Franchising Plans

From this experience, we’re curating  a rotating tap list of our favorite craft breweries from throughout the state. But don't worry, we also feature glasses and bottles from independent wineries throughout California. Additionally we pour craft ciders, nitro cold brew coffee, artisan sodas, and kombucha. The Laughlins opened Slice of Spice in 2010 after Daniel was looking for a new career when the economy took a hit during the Great Recession.

We are excited to open our Slice House in the neighborhood in which we grew up. The Burkharts plan to keep everything the same, including offering wood-fired pizza, drinks and a family-friendly environment. They also will be adding some of their own touches, including changing the restaurant’s name to Burkhart’s Pizza and Pub, installing additional televisions and offering some new menu items. Owners Mary and Daniel Laughlin announced they’re retiring and closing the restaurant. While they said they cherished the customers and staff through the years, it’s time to focus on traveling and spending time with their kids and grandchildren, they said. We have also hired an outstanding general manager and kitchen manager, who have many years of experience running similar operations, to help us achieve our goals.

In another article, Newsom said that he wanted to see more progress on homelessness. He blamed cities for the increasing number of unhoused people in California. We are thrilled to have my younger brother, Michael Margott, as a silent partner in our venture with Tony’s team. Michael is also one of the founding members of The Neighbourhood band, with many years of experience in the music industry.

Homeless encampments are on the ballot in Arizona. Could California, other states follow?

At State of Mind we make our food from scratch, highlighting local and seasonal ingredients. We believe California is much more than a place on the map; to us, it’s a State of Mind. With roots in the state dating back to the 1800s, our family had a long-held dream that came to life as State of Mind. We opened our first restaurant, State of Mind Public House and Pizzeria, in Los Altos in 2018.

As at their first pizzeria, all of the slow-proofed pizzas are made from organic California flour and topped with made-from-scratch sauces and ingredients like housemade chorizo, chevre, local vegetables and hot honey. California boasts more than 1,000 breweries and, while we haven’t tried them all, we have sampled hundreds, collectively of course. From this experience, we curate a can and bottle list featuring our favorite craft breweries from throughout the state. We have a list that includes IPAs, Pale Ales, Lagers, Stouts, Sours, Browns, Saisons and more. Don't worry, we also feature a small selection of wines from independent California wineries.

Ultimately, I hope to expand the franchise in other areas and create a legacy that my family can be proud of for generations to come. To be Tony Gemignani’s first Southern California location is a dream come true and an honor to us. We aim to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere in our Slice House locations, foster positive relationships with our customers, and build a reputation for excellence in the community.

More information and updates to Burkhart’s Pizza and Pub can be found on Laughlin’s Slice of Spice’s Facebook page. Andy expects to transfer the Facebook page over to the restaurant’s new name soon. At this time, Spring Arbor was also in need of a restaurant with a liquor license, Mary said.

"Our mission is to share the Japanese culture in Philadelphia. People are embracing shogun culture, anime, samurai, sake and it's all here. Throughout the year we have programs that celebrate the Japanese culture." If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation. The Laughlins tried selling the business since 2022, but with reconstruction on M-60 through Spring Arbor in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the restaurant was left with a lot to recover from, they said.

If we do not get people housed and out of the encampments, we are going to look like a third-world city. Many of them were intricately constructed of several different materials, some with a great deal of skill and artistry. And I could not help wondering at the time how there was such a disparity in that city between the extremely wealthy and so many poor people living in these shacks.

Additionally, we have craft ciders, organic juices, artisan sodas, local root beer, and ginger beer. We will carry Tarantula Hill, Energen, Institution, and Made West to support local craft breweries for our Thousand Oaks store. Welcome to State of Mind -- a Public House & Pizzeria inspired by the Golden State. We believe California is much more than a place on the map; to us, it’s a State of Mind. With roots in the state dating back to the 1800s, State of Mind brings to life the long-held dream of our family, all of whom were born and raised locally. We are excited to be in downtown Los Altos and share our love of all things California.
